This stamp sheet depicts British Formula One World Champion John Surtees. Surtees won both the Formula One and motorcycle World Championships, an achievement unlikely ever to be repeated. Driving for Ferrari, in 1964 he battled Jim Clark and Graham Hill to win the title by a single point.

Formula One is the highest class of international auto racing for single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile. Originally called Formula A, the first race to approved Formula One rules was a Grand Prix race held at Valentino Park, Turin, Italy, in 1946. In celebration of the Formula One World Championships, we have issued a total of 10 stamps, over a two-part series featuring ten of the top British Formula One champions.
Part Two is made up of five stamps, a miniature sheet and a souvenir sheetlet showcasing five British world champions. The five stamps feature Graham Hill, John Surtees, James Hunt, Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton. The miniature sheet features Jim Clark.
