A look back on Jersey's SEPAC issues

Did you know that Jersey, the largest island in the Channel Islands, is a member of the Small European Postal Administration Cooperation (SEPAC)? 

SEPAC was originally initiated in 1994 by philatelic agent Mr Paolo de Rosa, who created an annual conference for small postal administrations in Europe to discuss various philatelic matters. Following Paolo selling his philatelic agency, the postal administrations created their own annual conference in 1999. The committee is now represented by delegates from the same postal administrations which attended the De Rosa conference, including Jersey.

Due to the high amount of philatelic enthusiasts who are interested in acquiring SEPAC stamp collections, Jersey’s Philatelic department has ensured over the years to produce stamps that meet with each theme set by the committee, some of which are:

2016, SEPAC Folder 7, Colourful Seasons, includes a beautiful wintery photo of the Le Tour de Vinde lighthouse, located at Noirmont point within the south-west of the island.  

2017, SEPAC Folder 8, Local Handcrafts of Europe, features a lovely stamp from the Ancient Artifacts issue that depicted an ancient Roman pillar.

2020, SEPAC Folder 11 Art in the National Collection included an image of one of Claude Cahun’s enigmatic photographs taken from our Jersey Artists – Claude Cahun issue.

2021, SEPAC Folder 12 Old Maps including a historic map of Jersey the Historic Jersey Maps issue, which featured six stamps depict a selection of maps, ranging from a very early map of Jersey produced by John Norden in 1595, to a tourist road map produced by Harry Clark in 1930.  

2023, SEPAC Folder 14 Traditional Markets featured artwork by the brilliant local artist Lauren Radley, who depicted a fruit and veg marketplace found within Jersey’s Victorian marketplace. 

2024, SEPAC Folder 15 Iconic Tourist Destination featured a stamp from our 150 Years of La Corbiere Lighthouse – First Lit 1874 illustrated by the amazing Martin Mörck.

About the launch of SEPAC: Architectural History  

Jersey Post is recognising some of the island’s beautiful historic buildings with their most recent stamp issue ‘SEPAC: Architectural History of Jersey’, launched on Thursday 27th March 2025. The issue is illustrated by British artist Jenny Costello using her unique skill with watercolour to bring each historically relevant site to life.

Each building offers an insight into the island’s past, from the boom of the milling industry that led to various mill houses (two of which are featured in the issue), to the construction of traditional barracks following a threat of invasion after the Battle of Jersey.  

Throughout the years, Jersey’s architecture has been influenced by both British and French design, as well as local architects’ own unique twists. An example of this influence can be seen in 16 New Street, which was built around 1730. The architecture of the building has been described as a blend of Jersey vernacular and Georgian classical architecture with rendered walls, limewashed and scoured in imitation of masonry. 

The issue contains 8 individually illustrated stamps of varying tariffs, a souvenir sheetlet including all eight stamps, stamps first day cover, souvenir sheetlet first day cover, stamps presentation pack and souvenir sheetlet presentation pack.
 
Technical details: The issue has been illustrated by British artist Jenny Costello. Stamp die size 30mm x 40mm.  Souvenir Sheetlet size: 90mm x 180mm printed in four colour process offset lithography by bpost, Belgium. Stamp products © Jersey Post Ltd 2025. Issue date: 27 March 2025.
