Artist Feature: Hannah George
February 27, 2025

Hannah George is the British illustrator behind 2025’s Post & Go: Protected Plants stamp issue. Jersey Stamps contacted Hannah to find out more about what inspired her to become an artist.
Since the age of two Hannah knew that she wanted to ensure art was a part of her life forever and as she got older, that sentiment never changed. Hannah reflects that, if anything, after having the opportunity to turn art into a career she’s even more passionate about art and not a day goes by where she isn’t thinking about how to paint or create new artwork.
Asked if she would had ever wanted to go into another industry, Hannah said; “No I don't think so. I’m obsessed!”
Hannah developed her skills at Falmouth College of Arts, where she specialised in illustration after completing a foundation course in Brighton. The course allowed Hannah to further her natural skills as an artist and learn new techniques to combine her preferred art style of watercolour, pencil, ink and digital processing.
In terms of inspiration for her artwork, Hannah loves painting from life, whether it be a bowl of fruit or the children digging for worms. When asked about a particular type of art style she enjoys creating, Hannah said; “I love painting loosely, it’s the most challenging way to work but when you get it right it’s an absolute thrill. Equally though, painting a flower or apple in very fine detail can be a thoroughly therapeutic process.”
A trend she’s spotted within the art world is a move back to traditional skills, which is something she’s pleased to see. Hannah commented; “I love working in Procreate but the process of paint on paper is my first love.”
As well as the Post & Go: Protected Plants issue, Hannah has worked on an additional 2025 issue, which she thoroughly enjoyed and found fascinating to work on saying that the issue felt like a history lesson due to the nature of the series – more to come on that later in the year!
Faced with creating her first stamp issues, Hanah said she was very conscious of ensuring the artwork popped and that all the detail was still clear and recognisable when shrunk down to stamp size.
For this issue’s artwork Hannah first used watercolour to paint each image to get a feel of the ‘hand drawn’ elements and to add real depth to the work. She then scanned each piece to add refined details in Procreate.
When asked if there were any artists who inspired her, Hannah said: “Yes lots! Hockney's confidence in any material he chooses to work with, be it watercolour, acrylic or Procreate on the iPad, is so inspiring. Even at 87 he seems to be ahead of his game.”
To stay inspired as an artist, Hannah’s quote she lives by is; “Draw everyday, love everyday!”
