Additional Information

In the 19th century, Jersey was an essential shipbuilding hub due to the high demand of vessels for global voyagers, cod fishing, wartime and local trade. Due to the island's no-taxation policy and plentiful harbours, Jersey was able to produce world-class vessels for a fraction of the cost from larger exporters.

The set includes three ships, a map of the shipyards, Gorey Shipyard and Shipyard owner Daniel Le Vesconte, who was one of the most successful shipyard owners. He held the record for the largest number of vessels on the stocks. Based in ‘Tower Yard’ around First Tower in Jersey, Daniel’s yard also built ‘The Gemini’ a three-masted barque that made voyages to China, South America, the West Indies and New York. The Gemini has also made an appearance on Jersey’s 1993 one-pound coin.
